Now Live: HGL’s 2021 Open Call!

Apply by March 1st to join Higher Ground Labs’ 2021 Accelerator.

Innovation drove our collective success in 2020. Technology allowed campaigns to adapt during a pandemic, respond to unprecedented amounts of misinformation, and ultimately defeat President Trump. But we know our job is far from complete – we must invest behind the strongest ideas and founders today with an eye towards the future.

Are you working on a technology start-up that can help progressives win elections and advance progressive causes? If so, apply to be part of the HGL’s 2021 Accelerator!

In 2021, Higher Ground Labs will invest in a fourth cohort of for-profit start-ups that are building technologies for politics and advocacy. This cohort will join a vibrant community of 30+ HGL startups that have reshaped the political technology landscape.

Startups invited to our accelerator receive investment capital and access to an intensive, 4-month program where you will learn from experts on sales, marketing and product, dive deep into the political market, and meet with key clients and investors. We welcome applications from all entrepreneurs who are committed to furthering Democratic and progressive outcomes.

The application deadline is March 1. Apply today!

Our founders are at the core of our mission and our community. We can’t wait to meet you.

Q&A

Does HGL invest in non-profits?
No. Higher Ground Labs is focused on investing in for-profit vehicles that have a viable business model with a path to generate returns in the market. We see this structure as more effective for collaboration and more rigorous for delivering impactful products. We know that not all political tech should be created in a for-profit structure, but we are only investing in the ones that are.

What is the average investment size?
In past cohorts, our average seed investment was $100k. Our average follow-on investment into companies post-accelerator was $1 million. The actual amount will vary by company based on need, stage, and team. Sometimes we will structure that amount based on milestones during or after the accelerator program.

How does HGL invest?
We invest through a standard convertible note or revenue based financing with a cap that can be negotiated by the company.

When does the program start and what does it entail?
We anticipate that the 2021 accelerator program will start in July and run through November. The program includes an intensive each month where founders come together in Chicago, DC, or San Francisco for four multi-day “bootcamps” around aspects of the business. In addition, the program includes regular coaching calls, access to the HGL Advisory Board, and regular introductions to potential clients and investors.

Will the programming be in person? What accommodations are you making for COVID?
We expect to conduct this year’s accelerator program in person, assuming all participants have been vaccinated and feel comfortable convening. However, we will re-assess the safety and feasibility of gathering in person in May and conduct our programming in accordance with the latest CDC guidelines.

When will you HGL make decisions on investments?
We plan to make offers on investments in May 2021.
