My Internship with Higher Ground Labs in Summer 2023

This summer, I had the opportunity to work at an innovative company that is investing in the future of our democracy through tech. As a political science major with a passion for social justice, my internship at Higher Ground Labs has equipped me with the skills necessary to assist in pushing democracy forward.

Throughout my internship at HGL, I was tasked with managing social media platforms, event planning, and performing research. I started by creating content for the 2023 Accelerator Cohort launch to promote the eight game-changing companies that most recently joined the HGL portfolio.

In July, I had the privilege of attending the first 2023 Accelerator programming week in Chicago, where the HGL6 startups completed numerous trainings in preparation for the upcoming presidential election. I learned from experts in the progressive space as they conducted workshops on the political tech ecosystem, industry mapping, and business management. Additionally, I had the opportunity to meet the founders 1:1 and write about their purpose for working in this space, as well as shed light on their products’ innovative features.

Attending the HGL6 Accelerator was an eye-opening experience. As a young person living in the midst of major political shifts, it can be intimidating to navigate making real social change. However, I am inspired by the HGL team, portfolio companies, and community partners as they collaborate to prepare products that will shape our civic engagement, voting access, and fundraising capabilities. I have gained insight on how to best combine expertise and resources amongst like-minded individuals and feel better prepared to unlock my own potential in progressive politics.

Along with supporting the new cohort, I also refreshed our Portfolio Political Tech Snapshots, conducted research on upcoming elections, and collaborated with HGL’s Community Director to analyze our content and communications. These tasks greatly expanded my writing, analysis, and organizing abilities. As a rising third year student who hopes to pursue a career in law and government, I am certain this skill set will shape my ability to dismantle unjust systems.

It has been a pleasure to work at Higher Ground Labs, and I am thankful for their endless support as they guided me through the political tech industry. I am excited to see the future and impact of HGL’s portfolio companies as progressives across the nation gear up for the 2024 elections.

I am leaving this internship with plans to continue pursuing civic opportunities and stay engaged in the fight to secure our democracy. I thank the staff at HGL for planting this seed.
