Recap: HGL’s Virtual New Political Technology Tool Showcase

Higher Ground Labs hosted its first virtual New Political Technology Tool showcase on Thursday, September 23rd. Ten founders of startups in HGL’s 2021 Accelerator pitched a broad range of technology solutions to nearly 300 progressive technologists leading digital innovation for campaigns, advocacy organizations, labor unions and consulting firms across the country.

Normally held in person in Washington, DC, the updated virtual format was a reminder of the new landscape operatives are navigating in the age of COVID-19 and the key role that technology continues to play for campaigners working to update their strategies and meet the moment.

The event kicked off with a keynote address from the Honorable Congresswoman Lauren Underwood of Illinois 14th District. The Congresswoman underscored the importance of ongoing innovation in technology as we approach the 2022 midterm elections. She stressed the narrow margin under which key seats are won and lost, and encouraged continued focus on building digital first strategies that are accessible for candidates up and down the ballot.

The  Congresswoman concluded her comments with excellent advice for the HGL community: “Please keep your products easy to use for volunteers, please start early in election years and election cycles… and most importantly, please be creative, keep listening, and never stop innovating.”
